Echoes of Silence

Touché Boutique (a Tunnel Project)

Little Havana, Miami, FL

Photos by Nicole Combeau..

Echoes of Silence is an installation for Touché Boutique composed of hardened sugar. These amorphous blocks capture and reflect natural light, evoking an amber-like radiance. They are embedded with personal ephemera gathered in collaboration with the local community, serving as a tangible link between past and present.

The use of sugar as the basis for the sculpture is a direct reference to the impact the sugar industry has had on the Caribbean, Florida, and other parts of the United States where where sugar refinement became a cornerstone of the economy. This history is inextricably woven with the dark threads of the transatlantic slave trade and the violence inflicted upon enslaved Africans and their descendants.

As the installation gradually dissolves throughout the exhibition, it resists commodification while simultaneously embodying the transformative power of time and space. This dissolution process speaks to the way objects and their inherent stories evolve, forming something entirely new that still carries traces of its origins. In essence, the installation paints a vivid portrait of a people who, shaped by forces beyond their control, have become an integral part of Miami's rich cultural tapestry.
